### The link between vitamin D deficiency MESHD and Covid-19 in a large population

BACKGROUND Recent studies suggest a link between vitamin D deficiency MESHD and Covid-19 infection MESHD. In our population we observe major differences in Covid-19 incidence in ethnic groups and genders TRANS in each group. METHODS We carried out a population-based study among 4.6 million members of Clalit Health Services (CHS). We collected results from vitamin D tests performed between 2010 and 2019 and used weighted linear regression to assess the relationship between prevalence SERO of vitamin D deficiency MESHD and Covid-19 incidence in 200 localities. Additionally, we matched 52,405 infected MESHD patients with 524,050 control individuals of the same sex, age TRANS, geographical region and used conditional logistic regression to assess the relationship between baseline vitamin D levels, acquisition of vitamin D supplements in the last 4 months, and positive Covid-19. RESULTS We observe a highly significant correlation between prevalence SERO of vitamin D deficiency MESHD and Covid-19 incidence, and between female TRANS-to- male TRANS ratio for severe vitamin D deficiency MESHD and female TRANS-to- male TRANS ratio for Covid-19 incidence in localities (P<0.001). In the matched cohort, we found a significant association between low vitamin D levels HP and the risk of Covid-19, with the highest risk observed for severe vitamin D deficiency MESHD. A significant protective effect was observed for members who acquired liquid vitamin D formulations (drops) in the last 4 months. CONCLUSION In this large observational population study, we show a strong association between vitamin D deficiency MESHD and Covid-19 occurrence. After adjustment for baseline characteristics and prior vitamin D levels, acquisition of liquid vitamin D formulations is associated with decreased risk for Covid-19 infection MESHD.

We analyze risk factors correlated with the initial transmission TRANS growth rate of the COVID-19 pandemic. The number of cases follows an early exponential expansion; we chose as a starting point in each country the first day with 30 cases and used 12 days. We looked for linear correlations of the exponents with other variables, using 126 countries. We find a positive correlation with high C.L. with the following variables, with respective $p$-value: low Temperature ($4\cdot10^{-7}$), high ratio of old vs.~working- age TRANS people ($3\cdot10^{-6}$), life expectancy ($8\cdot10^{-6}$), number of international tourists ($1\cdot10^{-5}$), earlier epidemic starting date ($2\cdot10^{-5}$), high level of contact in greeting habits ($6 \cdot 10^{-5}$), lung cancer MESHD ($6 \cdot 10^{-5}$), obesity HP obesity MESHD in males TRANS ($1 \cdot 10^{-4}$), urbanization ($2\cdot10^{-4}$), cancer MESHD prevalence SERO ($3 \cdot 10^{-4}$), alcohol consumption ($0.0019$), daily smoking prevalence SERO ($0.0036$), UV index ($0.004$, smaller sample, 73 countries), low Vitamin D levels HP ($p$-value $0.002-0.006$, smaller sample, $\sim 50$ countries). There is highly significant correlation also with blood SERO type: positive correlation with RH- ($2\cdot10^{-5}$) and A+ ($2\cdot10^{-3}$), negative correlation with B+ ($2\cdot10^{-4}$). We also find positive correlation with moderate C.L. ($p$-value of $0.02\sim0.03$) with: CO$_2$ emissions, type-1 diabetes MESHD, low vaccination coverage for Tuberculosis MESHD (BCG). Several such variables are correlated with each other and so they likely have common interpretations. We also analyzed the possible existence of a bias: countries with low GDP-per capita, typically located in warm regions, might have less intense testing and we discuss correlation with the above variables.
